Bungalow Sultan Sulaiman, Fraser's Hill
Bungalow Sultan Sulaiman, Fraser's Hill by One
Red Blazer.
Two weeks ago I was given a precious opportunity to follow
YB Lee Kee Hiong to visit the magnificent Bungalow Sultan Sulaiman at Fraser's
Hill. Fraser's Hill is known to be part of Pahang state but this beautiful
cottage sits within the boundary of Selangor. Fraser's Hill is one of the
famous highland resorts in Malaysia
and thousands of tourists come to explore the nature reserve that provides
habitat for a vast array of flora and fauna. It is normally busy during the
weekends and special days like the annual International Bird Race held by the
government. The chilling weather here (at average altitude of 1200 meters high)
provides some chilly fresh air for those who wish to escape from the heat in
the city.
There are many resorts and cottages in old English designs
in Fraser's Hill because the place was discovered and developed by a Scottish
prospector Louis James Fraser in the 1890s when tin mining business was
bustling in Kuala Kubu Bharu and Raub. Those houses were once occupied by
British prospectors, officers and their families according to the locals. The
British built the houses very much according to the house designs in England
according to their memories from home and also to suit the chill climate in the
early days.
Bungalow Sultan Sulaiman was built and used in 1938. It was
taken over by the government of Selangor state after the British left the place
after the national independence in 1957. The cottage served as a private
leisure resort for Sultan of Selangor since then. The 76 years old cottage is
considered very well kept as no major damage to the structure and walls can be
found. It is a valuable heritage to be treasured that reminds us the history in
the past and the antique designs remain as the best references for architecture
enthusiasts without needing to go abroad.
